Richard Dawkins explains the related egg-laying habits of Nazca Boobies, Blue Footed Boobies and Gannetts. These evolved adaptations may seem cruel to us, but the genes for these varying insurance policies get passed on through the surviving chicks to future generations.

“In May 2007, I went to Galapagos with a large group from the
Center for Inquiry. As a small group of us walked with the guided
parties over the island, occasionally I would take the opportunity to
film the wildlife and speak about their significance. The result are
these ‘vignettes’, which were unscripted.”

  1. I am sure they will say that god gets no blame because we sinned and now live in a fallen world…how convenient if you think about it…no blame but only reward.

  2. Intelligent Design proponents are missing the point! The truth is that the Universe was designed by a very stupid designer! I suppose 'Idiot Design' isn't quite so marketable as a concept.

  3. Fundamentalist Christians believe that God originally created everything perfect and that hardships in nature only appeared after Adam and Eve sinned. What I cannot understand is how they can think that an all powerful being is content to just watch the suffering. Apparently, it is all our fault. This is the main reason that I can no longer believe.

  4. "The natural selection takes no pitty" if used as a form of philosophy in humans could have terrible conequences, basically allows you to kill anyone who may stand in your way.

If you want to pick a fight with creationists over facts no doubt you win there, but not all religios people are creationists, most are not.

Religion for most is form of philosophy by which to live their life; same as is ethics or morals for both religious people and atheists alike – but if you would use these natural laws as form of philosophy – the survival of the fittest etc. your end result would be the same as when religious extremists use their holly books to justify murder and crime.

  6. Just look at all that bird poop o_o
So sad that whenever evolution is mentioned, the religious trolls show up. Just like bird poop, there's always more of them to be found.

  7. I was joking to a friend of mine who was here as this video started, and I see from the comments that I was probably right, that this video would have gotten way more hits if it had been titled "A Video About Boobies". 🙂

Now that I think about it, even better would have been the slight modification: "Richard Dawkins: Insurance Policy: Two Boobies, One Rear"

  8. First, forgive me, love videos about boobies.   Had to be said.

We see the same kind of evolutionary strategy championed by religious conservatives.  Look at the end result of the rights social policies and you see the same thing that these birds do.  They want children to be born and then feel no obligation to help them survive.  Opposition to birth control, their revulsion at sex education, denial of a woman's right to family planning, these things all produce more children than the environment can comfortably sustain.  It's a quantity vs. quality position, same as the boobies.

The more we learn about human behavior, the more we see the importance of environment on the development of children.  Rather than worrying about stem cells, we should be doing everything in our power to make sure that the children who are born have proper nutrition, both prenatal and post birth, and care.  We could literally change the world in a couple of generations if we simply looked at our problems rationally.

  9. If one were to read the wiki entry on blue footed boobies, one would see that Dawkins' account is oversimplified.  More important than having two eggs is having asynchronous hatching.

  10. Is there a documentary where they take a group of religious fanatics that have no prior contact with any information outside of their church, then they introduce all these facts that we can see so they wouldnt bury their heads by saying "You werent there to witness it"? Would be pretty entertaining seeing logic and reason emerging from a religious nut, gives one hope that the human race isint a lost cause.

  11. Regarding the question at the end of the video…. Don't forget the third possibility…. that maybe their imagined creator is secretly seen to be both cruel AND incompetent.  In fact, I have had many theists express to me in private that they see their God in such a way… but I will of course not say specifically which ones have told me such a thing because that would defeat the purpose of their having said it in private. Many also tend to think that their God is probably not real, but are afraid to say such a thing in public just in case it is real.  Note that if they actually believed their God to be all knowing, it probably wouldn't matter to them if they told the truth about their beliefs in public or in private. Those are the ones who go around threatening people with burning forever in Hell, because they figure if their God does turn out to exist, it's going to know they didn't really believe in it, and they are so scared of what that would mean that they are willing to throw their life away trying to convert people in the hopes that if there turns out to be an afterlife, they JUST MIGHT be forgiven for not having enough blind faith to feel convinced.
